Shards are used to buy permanent PvP upgrades like speed, (limited) strength, resistance, passive regen and HP. When you die, you lose a random upgrade, so there’s always risk. There’s a PvP prestige system to unlock higher levels, clans with bonuses, warzones/KOTH/events, slow progression and zero pay-to-win since shards can’t be bought.
